About Jack Phillips
Jack "Stretch" Phillips was a right-handed first baseman signed by legendary Yankees scout Paul Krichell out of Clarkson College in upstate New York, where he starred as a pitcher and first baseman before turning pro in 1943. The 6-foot-4 Clarence, New York native earned his nickname "Stretch" for the long reach and lanky frame he used to scoop throws at first base. He debuted with the New York Yankees on August 22, 1947, and was a member of that year's World Series champions, though he appeared only as a pinch-hitter in the Series. Over nine major-league seasons with the Yankees (1947-49), Pittsburgh Pirates (1949-52), and Detroit Tigers (1955-57), Phillips was chiefly a reserve, batting .283 with 252 hits, 9 home runs, and 101 RBI in 343 games. His signature moment came on July 8, 1950, when, playing for the Pirates, he hit a walk-off pinch-hit grand slam to erase a three-run deficit against the St. Louis Cardinals for a 7-6 win, a rare "ultimate" grand slam. This 1952 Topps card captures Phillips during his Pirates tenure and is among his earliest cardboard appearances. After his playing days he returned to Clarkson University, coaching baseball for more than two decades; he was inducted into the Clarkson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992, and the school's ballpark was named Jack Phillips Stadium in his honor in 2008.
