About Tommy Byrne
A hard-throwing left-hander out of Baltimore City College and Wake Forest, Tommy Byrne (1919-2007) debuted with the New York Yankees in 1943, served as a Navy gunnery officer during World War II, and pitched 13 major-league seasons through 1957. Nicknamed the "Wild Man" for his chronic control troubles, he led the American League in hit batsmen five straight years and walked more men than he struck out, yet he could dominate: he went 85-69 with a 4.11 ERA and 766 strikeouts, made the 1950 AL All-Star team, and enjoyed a career year in 1955, going 16-5 with a 3.15 ERA to pace the league in winning percentage (.762). Byrne won World Series rings in 1949 and 1956 and pitched effectively in four Series appearances (2-2, 2.53 ERA), including a strong start and a two-run single in Game 2 of the 1955 classic. A genuine threat at the plate for a pitcher (.238, 14 homers), he famously delivered a game-winning pinch-hit grand slam off Ewell Blackwell in 1953 — the only pinch grand slam by a pitcher in Chicago White Sox history. This 1952 Topps card captures him with the St. Louis Browns, to whom the Yankees dealt him in 1951; he later returned to New York and, after baseball, served as mayor of Wake Forest, North Carolina.
