1952 Topps #271 Jim Delsing

About Jim Delsing
Jim Delsing (1925-2006), a left-handed outfielder born in Rudolph, Wisconsin, signed with the Green Bay Bluejays at age 16 in 1942 before Army service in Europe during World War II interrupted his climb. He reached the majors with the Chicago White Sox in 1948 and played 10 seasons through 1960, patrolling center and left field for the White Sox, New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Athletics. Over 822 games he batted .255 with 627 hits, 40 home runs, and 286 RBI, enjoying his best year in 1953 with Detroit (.288, 11 HR, 62 RBI in 138 games). Delsing is forever tied to one of baseball's most famous stunts: on August 19, 1951, Browns owner Bill Veeck sent 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel up to pinch-hit, and after Gaedel drew a walk, Delsing was sent in to pinch-run for him. He later joked, "A lot of people say Maris hit 61, but I'm the only one who ran for a midget." He was also the Tigers center fielder replaced by Al Kaline in Kaline's June 25, 1953 major-league debut. This card appears in the fifth series of the 1952 Topps set; the truly scarce high numbers begin at #311, home to the landmark Mickey Mantle card.
