1952 Topps #64 Roy Sievers

About Roy Sievers
Signed by the St. Louis Browns as a St. Louis-born teenager in the mid-1940s, right-handed slugger Roy Sievers reached the majors with the Browns in 1949 and was named the inaugural American League Rookie of the Year that season. Over 17 big-league seasons he played first base and the outfield for the Browns (1949-1953), the original Washington Senators (1954-1959), the Chicago White Sox (1960-1961), the Philadelphia Phillies (1962-1964), and the expansion Senators (1964-1965). His signature year came in 1957 with Washington, when he batted .301 and led the AL in both home runs (42) and RBIs (114) - becoming the first player in major-league history to lead his league in homers and RBIs while playing for a last-place club, outdueling Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams for the home run crown. A multiple-time All-Star, Sievers finished with a .267 average, 318 home runs, 1,703 hits, and 1,147 RBIs over 1,887 games, becoming one of the earliest players to reach 300 career homers. Tall and lanky, he was nicknamed "Squirrel" for hanging around the basket as a schoolboy basketball player. This first-series card exists with both black-print and red-print backs, a documented color variation collectors track. Sievers died in 2017 at age 90.
