About Ned Garver
A right-handed pitcher born on Christmas Day 1925 in Ney, Ohio, Ned Garver signed with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1944 and dominated the minors from the start, leading the Class D Ohio State League in wins, innings, and ERA in his first pro season. He reached the majors with the Browns in 1948 and pitched 14 big-league seasons through 1961, also serving the Detroit Tigers (1952-1956), Kansas City Athletics (1957-1960), and Los Angeles Angels (1961). Garver's signature season came in 1951, when he went 20-12 for a Browns club that finished a woeful 52-102, becoming the first pitcher in major-league history to win 20 games for a 100-loss team. He led the American League in complete games in both 1950 and 1951, made his only All-Star team in 1951 (starting the game opposite Robin Roberts), and drew as many first-place MVP votes as Yankees Yogi Berra and Allie Reynolds. A cerebral craftsman rather than a flamethrower, he also hit well, batting .305 in 1951 and homering to clinch his 20th win in the season finale. Garver finished 129-157 with a 3.73 ERA and 153 complete games. This card is part of the 1952 Topps set's fourth series; it is not among the scarce high-number cards (#311-407, which includes the famous Mickey Mantle #311 and were printed in far smaller quantities), making it more available to collectors than those legendary high numbers.
