1952 Topps #58 Bob Mahoney
1952 Topps #58 Bob Mahoney

About Bob Mahoney
Robert Paul Mahoney (June 20, 1928 - August 27, 2000) was a right-handed pitcher from Le Roy, Minnesota, whose 1952 Topps card, No. 58, sits in the accessible first series of the landmark set (not the scarce high-number run of #311-407 that includes the famous Mickey Mantle). Mahoney turned pro in 1947, winning 17 games for the Class D Carthage Cardinals of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League, and after a 20-7 season for Omaha he was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the Rule 5 draft. He debuted with Chicago on May 3, 1951, but after surrendering a grand slam to Al Rosen on May 13 he was placed on waivers and claimed by the pitching-poor St. Louis Browns on May 29, 1951. He is pictured here as a Brown, the team for which he pitched into June 1952. Over parts of two big-league seasons and 36 games (four starts), Mahoney went 2-5 with a 4.96 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings. One of his best outings came June 29, 1951, against his former White Sox club, when he worked 6 2/3 innings of mop-up relief, allowed just two runs on four hits, and added two singles at the plate. Because 1951 was his debut season, this is his rookie card, issued in both the black-back and red-back color variations found throughout the set's first series.
