About Gordon Goldsberry
Gordon Frederick Goldsberry, a left-handed-hitting first baseman out of Sacramento, California, attended UCLA and rose through the Pacific Coast League with clubs such as the Hollywood Stars, Los Angeles Angels, Oakland Oaks, and Seattle Rainiers before reaching the majors. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1949 and played four big-league seasons (1949-1952), spending 1949-1951 in Chicago and his final campaign, 1952, with the St. Louis Browns, the team shown on this rookie card. A backup first baseman, he appeared in 217 games and batted .241 with 123 hits, 20 doubles, 7 triples, 6 home runs, and 56 RBI. His most lasting mark on the game came after his playing days: Goldsberry became a respected scout and front-office executive, and while working for the Milwaukee Brewers he signed future Hall of Famer Robin Yount. He later served as the Chicago Cubs' director of player development and scouting under Dallas Green and as a special assistant with the Baltimore Orioles, a post he held until his death in 1996. As a 1952 Topps card #46, his card appears in the low-numbered Series 1 and is found with both black-back and red-back printing variations.
