About Enos Slaughter

Signed by scout Billy Southworth for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1935, Enos Slaughter climbed through the minors and debuted in the majors on April 19, 1938. A left-handed-hitting right fielder famous for his all-out hustle, he played 19 seasons (1938-1959) for the Cardinals, New York Yankees, Kansas City Athletics, and Milwaukee Braves, losing three prime years (1943-1945) to Army Air Corps service in World War II. A ten-time All-Star, Slaughter batted .300 with 2,383 hits, 169 home runs, and 1,304 RBI, and led the National League with 130 RBI in 1946. He won four World Series titles: 1942 and 1946 with St. Louis and 1956 and 1958 with the Yankees. Nicknamed "Country" for his rural Roxboro, North Carolina, roots, he is best remembered for his 1946 "Mad Dash," racing home from first base on a Game 7 hit to score the Series-winning run against the Boston Red Sox. He was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1985. This card #65 is a Series 1 issue and, like other 1952 Topps cards, is found with either a black or red printed back.
