About Dale Coogan
Dale Roger Coogan was a left-handed first baseman whose entire major-league career amounted to a single season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Born August 14, 1930, in Los Angeles, he signed with the Pirates in 1948 out of Washington High School and reached Pittsburgh after two years in the farm system, including a stint at Triple-A Indianapolis. Coogan debuted on April 22, 1950, at just 19 years old, appearing in 53 games and starting 27 at first base. He batted .240 with 31 hits, six doubles, a triple, one home run and 13 RBI, drawing 17 walks for a respectable .338 on-base percentage. His lone big-league homer was a memorable three-run blast off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca in a rain-suspended game that opened June 24 and concluded August 1; he also enjoyed a four-hit day on May 30 against St. Louis. Demoted to Indianapolis in July 1950, Coogan never returned to the majors. He instead built a long career in education, earning degrees from Long Beach State and a doctorate from USC and rising to school superintendent in Southern California before his death from cancer on March 8, 1989. This 1952 Topps card—one of the low-number commons issued the year Topps launched its landmark flagship set—remains his only mainstream Topps issue.
