About Clyde McCullough
Clyde Edward McCullough, a right-handed catcher born March 4, 1917, in Nashville, Tennessee (d. 1982), reached the majors after being sold from the Yankees' farm system to the Chicago Cubs, debuting April 28, 1940. Over 15 seasons he played for the Cubs (1940-43, 1946-48, 1953-56) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1949-52) — his Pirates tenure matching this 1952 Topps card. He earned two National League All-Star selections (1948 and 1953) and finished with a .252 average, 785 hits, 52 home runs, and 339 RBI across 1,098 games. McCullough owns a singular distinction: after Navy service in World War II cost him the 1944-45 seasons, he was discharged in September 1945 and added to the Cubs' World Series roster, striking out as a pinch-hitter against Hal Newhouser in Game 7 — the only player ever to appear in a World Series without playing a regular-season game that year. He later caught Sam Jones' 1955 no-hitter and, as a Mets farm instructor, helped develop Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan.
