1952 Topps #250 Carl Erskine
1952 Topps #250 Carl Erskine

About Carl Erskine
A right-handed pitcher from Anderson, Indiana, Carl Erskine signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946 after a discharge from the U.S. Navy and a Commissioner Happy Chandler ruling that briefly made him a free agent. He reached the majors in 1948 and spent his entire 12-season career (1948-1959) with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, finishing 122-78 with a 4.00 ERA and 981 strikeouts. A mainstay on the "Boys of Summer" clubs that captured five National League pennants, Erskine threw two no-hitters, blanking the Cubs on June 19, 1952 (a lone walk away from a perfect game) and the Giants on May 12, 1956. His 1953 season was his finest: he won 20 games for the only time in his career, was named an All-Star the following year, and in Game 3 of the 1953 World Series struck out 14 Yankees, breaking Howard Ehmke's 1929 Series record (a mark that stood until Sandy Koufax fanned 15 in 1963). He earned a championship ring with Brooklyn's only World Series title in 1955. Affectionately known to Brooklyn fans as "Oisk," a nod to the borough's accent, Erskine died in 2024 at 97 as the last surviving member of that 1955 champion club. This card, #250, sits just below the celebrated scarce high-number series (#311-407, headlined by the iconic Mickey Mantle #311) that makes the back end of the 1952 Topps set so coveted.
