About Bobby Adams
Robert Henry "Bobby" Adams was a right-handed infielder signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1939 alongside his brother Dick and assigned to the Ogden Reds of the Class C Pioneer League, working through Columbia and Syracuse before World War II interrupted his climb. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1943 to 1945, playing service ball across the South Pacific, then debuted with Cincinnati in 1946 as the club's regular second baseman. Over a 14-season career (1946-1959) with the Reds/Redlegs, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs, the 5-foot-10 Adams shifted to third base as Cincinnati's regular there beginning in 1951. His finest year came in 1952 - the same season as this card - when he led the National League in at-bats (637), games (154), and singles (152) while batting .283 with career highs of 180 hits and 25 doubles. He retired with a .269 average, 37 home runs, and 303 RBI over 1,281 games. Father of outfielder Mike Adams, he later coached for the Cubs in their "College of Coaches" and served as president of the Triple-A Tacoma Cubs. This #249 card falls in the fourth series, below the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the famous Mickey Mantle.
