About Don Mueller
A right fielder signed by the New York Giants in 1944 as a 17-year-old still in high school, Don Mueller was the son of Walter Mueller, a 1920s Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder who drilled hitting fundamentals into him. He reached the majors in 1948 and spent 12 seasons in the big leagues (1948-1959) — the first ten with the Giants, the last two with the Chicago White Sox — retiring with a .296 average, 1,292 hits, 65 home runs and 520 RBI over 1,245 games. A brilliant contact hitter, he was nicknamed "Mandrake the Magician" by sportswriters for his knack of stroking the ball through holes in the defense, striking out only 146 times in his career. Mueller was a two-time All-Star (1954-1955) and enjoyed his finest season in 1954, leading the National League with 212 hits, hitting for the cycle on July 1, and losing the batting title on the final day to teammate Willie Mays (.345 to .342). That fall he batted .389 in the World Series as the Giants swept the Cleveland Indians for the championship. He also figured in one of baseball's most famous moments: in the ninth inning of the 1951 pennant playoff, his single helped fuel the Giants' rally that set up Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World," though Mueller injured his ankle at third base and had to be carried off just before the homer. On card #52 in the low-number first series, his front-facing photo appears with the set's characteristic black-back or red-back printing variation.
