About Bill Rigney
Bill Rigney signed with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1938 and worked his way up through the minors, his career interrupted by U.S. Coast Guard service during World War II. A right-handed infielder who played primarily second base, shortstop and third base, he debuted with the New York Giants in April 1946 and spent his entire eight-year playing career (1946-1953) with the club. His most productive season came in 1947, when he set career highs with 17 home runs, 59 RBI, 142 hits and 84 runs; he was selected to the 1948 All-Star Game, and appeared as a utility man and pinch-hitter in the Giants' pennant-winning 1951 World Series against the Yankees, collecting his lone Series hit in Game Six. Over 654 games he batted .259 with 510 hits, 41 home runs and 212 RBI. Nicknamed "Specs" and "The Cricket," Rigney is best remembered for a long managerial career: he became the New York/San Francisco Giants' skipper in 1956, then in 1961 was named the first manager in Los Angeles Angels history, earning The Sporting News Manager of the Year honors in 1962, and later guided the Minnesota Twins to the 1970 AL West title. He died in 2001. This is a card from the second series of the landmark 1952 Topps set, well below the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that includes the hobby's famous Mickey Mantle card.
