About Johnny Mize

Johnny Mize, the slugging left-handed first baseman nicknamed "The Big Cat" for his graceful, feline poise both at the plate and in the field, came out of Demorest, Georgia, through the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system and debuted with St. Louis in 1936, batting .329 with 19 home runs. Over 15 major-league seasons with the Cardinals (1936-41), New York Giants (1942, 1946-49), and New York Yankees (1949-53), he hit .312 with 2,011 hits, 359 home runs, and 1,337 RBI, and was a 10-time All-Star. Mize won the 1939 NL batting title (.349), led the National League in home runs four times (1939, 1940, 1947, 1948) and in RBI three times, while losing three prime years (1943-45) to Navy service in World War II. Reinventing himself as a feared pinch-hitter late in his career, he helped the Yankees win five straight World Series (1949-53); in the 1952 Fall Classic - the same year as this Topps card - he blasted three home runs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1981.
