About Bob Kuzava
A left-handed pitcher out of Wyandotte, Michigan, Bob Kuzava signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1941 out of St. Patrick High School and, after wartime Army service as a military policeman in India and Burma, debuted in the majors on September 21, 1946. Over 10 seasons he pitched for the Indians, White Sox, Senators, Yankees, Orioles, Phillies, Pirates, and Cardinals, compiling a 49-44 record, a 4.05 ERA, 446 strikeouts, and 13 saves. His career highlight came after a June 1951 trade to the New York Yankees, where he earned three World Series rings and became the first pitcher to save back-to-back Series-clinching games: he retired the Giants with the bases loaded to close out Game 6 in 1951, then set down the final eight Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 7 of 1952. Nicknamed "Sarge" (and also "The White Rat"), Kuzava was never an All-Star, and this card sits in the more common second series rather than the scarce high-number run (#311-407) that ends the landmark 1952 Topps set with the iconic Mickey Mantle #311.
