About Yogi Berra
One of the greatest catchers in baseball history, Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was born in St. Louis in 1925 and signed with the New York Yankees in 1942 for a $500 bonus after the hometown Cardinals passed on him. He debuted in 1946 following Navy service in World War II and played 19 major-league seasons (1946-1963, plus a 1965 cameo with the Mets), all but that final year in pinstripes. A left-handed-hitting catcher, Berra batted .285 with 358 home runs and 1,430 RBI, was an 18-time All-Star, and won the American League MVP three times (1951, 1954, 1955). He anchored the Yankee dynasty to a record 10 World Series titles as a player, appeared in a record 14 Fall Classics, hit the first pinch-hit home run in Series history (1947), and famously caught Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. His nickname dated to his youth, when a friend thought he resembled a yogi in a movie about India. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. Within the 1952 Topps set, card #191 is the leadoff card of the high-demand second series.
