1952 Topps #99 Gene Woodling

About Gene Woodling
Eugene Richard "Gene" Woodling (1922-2001) was a left-handed line-drive-hitting outfielder who signed with the Cleveland organization in 1940 and debuted with the Indians on September 23, 1943. After earning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year honors in 1948, he became a fixture in left field for the New York Yankees (1949-1954). There, under Casey Stengel, he and right fielder Hank Bauer were dubbed the "Gold Dust Twins" by a sportswriter, and Woodling became one of a small group of players to appear in all five of the Yankees' record five consecutive World Series championships (1949-1953). He was a clutch October performer, batting .318 across those Fall Classics and homering in each Series from 1951 through 1953. Over a 17-season career that also included Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington, and the Mets, he hit .284 with 147 home runs and topped .300 five times, earning a 1959 All-Star selection. Card #99 sits in the set's second series.
