About Don Bollweg
Donald Raymond Bollweg was a left-handed first baseman born February 12, 1921, in Wheaton, Illinois (d. 1996). Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1942, he had his climb interrupted by U.S. Army and Army Air Force service in World War II before resuming his career in 1946 and starring in the minors, including a 1952 American Association MVP season with the Kansas City Blues. Bollweg debuted with the Cardinals in September 1950 and appeared in 195 major-league games across five seasons (1950-51, 1953-55) with the Cardinals, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics. His finest year came in 1953, when as a reserve first baseman and pinch hitter he batted .297 with six home runs for a Yankees club that won its record fifth straight American League pennant and World Series; in the six-game Series win over Brooklyn he pinch-hit in Games 3 and 4 and entered Game 6 as a defensive replacement, earning a championship ring. That December he was dealt to the Athletics in an 11-player trade and shared first base with Lou Limmer in 1954. He finished with a career .243 average, 110 hits, 11 home runs, and 53 RBI. This is his rookie card, part of the 1952 Topps set's second series (not the scarce #311-407 high numbers).
