About Carl Scheib
Carl Scheib was a right-handed pitcher whose path to the majors began on a 10-acre family farm in tiny Gratz, Pennsylvania (population roughly 800), where a local grocery clerk spotted his talent and helped route word to Connie Mack. After a tryout at Shibe Park, the Philadelphia Athletics signed him, and he debuted on September 6, 1943, at just 16 years old — still the youngest player in American League history. Weeks later, on September 26, 1943, he became the youngest pitcher ever to record a strikeout, at 16 years and 268 days. Scheib pitched for the Athletics from 1943-1945 and 1947-1954, finishing with a brief 1954 stint for the St. Louis Cardinals, and posted a career 45-65 record with a 4.88 ERA, 290 strikeouts, and 17 saves over 267 games. His best campaign came in 1948 (14-8), a year in which he also hit .298 and slugged a grand slam against the White Sox — Scheib was a genuinely dangerous hitting pitcher, batting .396 in 1951 (21-for-53), the highest mark for a pitcher with that many at-bats since 1925, and finishing at .250 with 5 home runs and 59 RBI. His 1952 season, the year of this Topps card, saw him go 11-7 with a 4.39 ERA before a shoulder injury from heavy relief use eroded his fastball and ended his career in 1954. His story was later told in the 2016 biography "Wonder Boy: The Story of Carl Scheib." He died in 2018 at age 91.
