1952 Topps #210 Dick Fowler
1952 Topps #210 Dick Fowler

About Dick Fowler
A lanky right-handed pitcher born March 30, 1921 in Toronto, Dick Fowler signed out of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization after a 1937 tryout camp and worked his way up through Class D and B minor-league stops before reaching the Philadelphia Athletics in 1941 at age 20. His career was interrupted by service in the Canadian Army during World War II (1943-1945). Discharged in August 1945, he made his first start in three years on September 9, 1945 and threw a 1-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns — the American League's first no-hitter since Bob Feller in 1940 and the first ever by a Canadian-born pitcher. Remarkably, it was his only win of that season. Fowler pitched all ten of his big-league seasons for the Athletics (1941-42, 1945-52), finishing 66-79 with a 4.11 ERA, 382 strikeouts, and 11 shutouts over 221 games. His best years came in 1947 (12-11, 2.81 ERA) and back-to-back 15-win campaigns in 1948-49 despite a chronic shoulder ailment. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 and died in 1972 at age 51. As a mid-set card in the 1952 Topps run, #210 falls below the scarce high-number series (#311-407) that includes the famous Mickey Mantle #311.
