About Alex Kellner
Alexander Raymond Kellner (1924-1996) was a left-handed pitcher born in Tucson, Arizona, who first signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization as a teenager in 1941 before Navy service in the South Pacific (aboard the USS Callaghan, 1943-1946) interrupted his career. Released by Cincinnati, he was signed by the Philadelphia Athletics and reached the majors on April 29, 1948. His breakthrough came in 1949, when he went 20-12 with 245 innings and 19 complete games, becoming the first Athletics pitcher since Hall of Famer Lefty Grove (1933) to win 20; he earned an All-Star selection and finished runner-up for Rookie of the Year to Roy Sievers. In one of baseball's rarest reversals, he then lost 20 games in 1950. Kellner pitched 12 seasons for the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics (1948-1958), Cincinnati Redlegs (1958), and St. Louis Cardinals (1959), retiring with a 101-112 record and 816 strikeouts, and threw the first American League pitch after the Athletics relocated to Kansas City in 1955. His younger brother Walt Kellner also reached the majors. This card belongs to the landmark 1952 Topps set, the first Topps flagship issue - the same set headlined by the celebrated #311 Mickey Mantle and its scarce high-number series (#311-407).
