1952 Topps #293 Sibby Sisti

About Sibby Sisti
Sebastian Daniel "Sibby" Sisti was a Buffalo-born infielder signed by the Boston Bees (soon the Braves) out of Canisius High School after scout Jack Onslow got a tip on him, and he debuted in 1939 at just 18 as one of the youngest players in the National League. Over 13 major-league seasons (1939-1942 and 1946-1954, all with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves organization, with 1943-1945 lost to U.S. Coast Guard service in World War II), the versatile Sisti played every position except pitcher and catcher, becoming one of the game's earliest true utility men. He hit .244 for his career with 732 hits, 27 home runs and 260 RBI in more than 1,000 games. After winning The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year Award for a .343 season at Indianapolis in 1946, he made his mark in 1948 by taking over at second base for the injured Eddie Stanky and delivering a July 31 grand slam that helped spark Boston to its first pennant since 1914, though the Braves fell to the Cleveland Indians in that year's World Series. Sisti later coached in the minors and with the 1969 Seattle Pilots, served as technical advisor and played the Pittsburgh manager in the 1984 film The Natural, and was inducted into the Boston Braves Hall of Fame in 1994. His card is a fifth-series short-print, printed just short of the celebrated scarce high-number run that begins at #311 with the Mickey Mantle card.
