About Willard Marshall

Willard Warren Marshall (1921-2000), a left-handed-hitting, right-throwing right fielder from Richmond, Virginia, signed with the Atlanta Crackers in 1940 while attending Wake Forest College. He reached the New York Giants in 1942, earning All-Star honors as a rookie before losing the next three seasons to U.S. Marine Corps service in World War II. Returning in 1946, Marshall starred for the Giants (1942, 1946-1949), then played for the Boston Braves (1950-1952)-the club shown on this card-Cincinnati Reds (1952-1953) and Chicago White Sox (1954-1955). His finest year came in 1947, when he batted .291 with 36 home runs and 107 RBI as part of the record-setting Giants lineup manager Eddie Brannick dubbed the "Windowbreakers." A three-time All-Star (1942, 1947, 1949), in 1951 he became just the second outfielder ever to play an entire season without an error. Over 11 seasons he hit .274 with 130 home runs, 604 RBI and 1,160 hits. This card appears in the more common low-number second series.
