About Earl Torgeson

Clifford Earl Torgeson (born January 1, 1924, in Snohomish, Washington; died 1990 in Everett, Washington) was a left-handed first baseman who signed with the Seattle Rainiers in 1941 before serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, seeing combat in the Aleutians and Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He debuted with the Boston Braves in 1947 and played 15 major-league seasons through 1961 for five clubs: the Braves, Phillies, Tigers, White Sox, and Yankees. A patient, aggressive hitter who wore glasses, he batted .265 with 149 home runs and 740 RBIs. He starred for Boston's 1948 pennant winners, leading all World Series regulars at .389 in a loss to Cleveland, and led the National League with 120 runs in 1950. He also reached the 1959 World Series with the pennant-winning Chicago White Sox. Nicknamed "The Earl of Snohomish" after fellow townsman Hall of Famer Earl Averill, he was a scrappy competitor famed for removing his spectacles before a brawl. Card #97 is a standard second-series issue.
