About Ken Holcombe
Kenneth Edward Holcombe (1918-2010), born in Burnsville, North Carolina, was a right-handed pitcher who relied on a curveball and assorted breaking stuff rather than power. He entered pro ball through a 1938 Asheville tryout camp and worked his way up over a decade in the minors, including a standout 19-10, 2.86-ERA season for Sacramento that earned 1949 Pacific Coast League All-Star honors. Debuting for the Yankees on April 27, 1945, he went 3-3 with a sparkling 1.79 ERA as a rookie, then pitched for the Reds, White Sox, Browns and Red Sox across six major-league seasons (1945-1953), finishing 18-32 with a 3.98 ERA over 99 games. His best year came in 1951 with Chicago: 11-12 with 12 complete games and a 3.78 ERA despite weak run support. A Jehovah's Witness, he refused to fly, traveling by train while teammates flew. Chronic arm trouble ended his career. This White Sox card sits in the 1952 Topps second series, outside the #1-80 black/red-back variation range.
