About Floyd Baker
Floyd Wilson "The Mouse" Baker, a slick-fielding left-handed-hitting third baseman from Luray, Virginia, was signed by the St. Louis Browns organization in 1938 after a tryout with Clark Griffith's Washington Senators, then spent seven seasons in the minors before debuting in the majors in 1943. Over a 13-year career he played for the Browns (1943-44), Chicago White Sox (1945-51), Senators (1951-53), Boston Red Sox (1953-54) and Philadelphia Phillies (1954-55), batting .251 with 573 hits, 196 RBI and just a single home run in 874 games. That lone homer came on May 4, 1949, a two-run shot off Washington's Sid Hudson at Comiskey Park; famously, the temporary fence he cleared was gone the next morning. Never a slugger, Baker earned his keep with his glove and his batting eye, leading American League third basemen in fielding percentage (.978) in 1949 and drawing walks to post strong on-base numbers. His nickname "The Mouse," picked up with Milwaukee in 1946, came not from his 5-foot-9 frame but because he was so quiet he was seldom heard. After retiring he coached third base for the Minnesota Twins and scouted for more than three decades. On this 1952 Topps card Baker appears as a Senator; his card is a Series 5 short print, printed in smaller quantities than the set's lower numbers and scarcer today.
