1952 Topps #268 Bob Lemon
1952 Topps #268 Bob Lemon

About Bob Lemon
Bob Lemon signed with the Cleveland Indians at age 17 and spent his entire professional career in the organization, first as a light-hitting infielder and outfielder before being converted to the mound in 1946 on the recommendation of Navy teammates Birdie Tebbetts and Johnny Pesky to player-manager Lou Boudreau. The right-hander blossomed into one of the American League's premier pitchers of the 1950s, earning seven consecutive All-Star selections (1948–1954) and winning 20 games in a season seven times. He led the AL in wins (23 in 1950), innings, complete games, strikeouts, and shutouts in various seasons, and threw a no-hitter against Detroit on June 30, 1948. That fall he anchored Cleveland's world-championship rotation, going 2–0 with a 1.65 ERA in the 1948 World Series against the Boston Braves. A superb athlete, Lemon was also one of the best hitting pitchers ever, belting 37 career home runs. He finished 207–128 with a 3.23 ERA and 1,277 strikeouts and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976; he later managed the Yankees to the 1978 World Series title. Card #268 is part of the fifth series but falls just short of the scarce high-number run (#311–407) that makes the set's later cards so elusive.
