1986-87 Fleer #17 Michael Cooper
1986-87 Fleer #17 Michael Cooper

About Michael Cooper
A tenacious 6'7" wing out of the University of New Mexico, Michael Cooper was a third-round pick (60th overall) of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1978 NBA Draft and spent his entire NBA career - all 12 seasons, from 1978-79 through 1989-90 - with the Showtime Lakers. Primarily a defensive stopper and perimeter shooter, he was a key rotation piece on five NBA championship teams (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988). Cooper was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 1987 and earned eight All-Defensive Team selections (five first-team, three second-team), routinely drawing the assignment of guarding the league's best wings, including Larry Bird. He averaged 8.9 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds for his career. Fans and teammates called him "Coop," and Magic Johnson's lob-and-dunk connection with him became the famous "Coop-a-loop" alley-oop of the Showtime era. After his playing days he coached the Los Angeles Sparks to back-to-back WNBA titles (2001, 2002). Cooper was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.
