About Wayne Cooper

A 6'10" center out of the University of New Orleans, where he was named Sun Belt Player of the Year as a senior, Wayne Cooper was drafted in the second round (40th overall) of the 1978 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. Known simply as "Coop," he carved out a durable 14-season career (1978-1992) as a shot-blocking big man across five teams: the Warriors, Utah Jazz, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Portland Trail Blazers. Over 984 games he averaged 7.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks, totaling 1,535 career blocks. His best year came with Denver in 1985-86, when he started 78 games and posted 13.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks a night; he was the Nuggets' all-time blocks leader when he left in 1989. Cooper later reached the NBA Finals twice with Portland (1990 and 1992) before a long front-office and coaching run with the Sacramento Kings. He died in 2022 at age 65.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer Wayne Cooper is card #18 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Wayne Cooper was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Denver Nuggets.
