About Danny Schayes

Daniel Leslie "Danny" Schayes was a 6'11" center/power forward out of Syracuse University, where he was a first-team All-Big East and Academic All-American selection in 1981. The Utah Jazz took him 13th overall in the 1981 NBA Draft, and after two seasons in Utah he was traded to the Denver Nuggets, the team he is pictured with on this 1986-87 Fleer card and where he enjoyed the best years of his career. His high-water mark came in 1987-88, when he averaged 13.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for Denver. A durable role player, Schayes went on to play 18 NBA seasons (1981-1999) across seven franchises - the Jazz, Nuggets, Bucks, Lakers, Suns, Heat, Magic, and Orlando - appearing in 1,138 games and averaging 7.7 points and 5.0 rebounds for his career. He was never an All-Star and is not in the Hall of Fame, but he is basketball royalty: his father is Naismith Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes. This Fleer issue is Danny's first widely collected card.

About this card

Because of the multi-year gap, it is the recognized Rookie Card for Danny Schayes. He is pictured with the Denver Nuggets.
