About Ralph Sampson

A three-time College Player of the Year at the University of Virginia, the 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson was taken first overall by the Houston Rockets in the 1983 NBA Draft. He earned 1983-84 Rookie of the Year honors, averaging 21.0 points and 11.1 rebounds, and made four straight All-Star teams (1984-1987), winning the 1985 All-Star Game MVP with 24 points and 10 rebounds. He was named All-NBA Second Team in 1985. After Houston drafted Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984, the two formed the fabled "Twin Towers" front line that carried the Rockets to the 1986 NBA Finals, where they fell to Boston; Sampson's twisting buzzer-beater in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals had eliminated the rival Lakers. Repeated knee injuries cut short his prime, and he later played for Golden State, Sacramento and Washington across a 12-season career (retiring 1995). This is his rookie card; he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1986-87 Fleer Ralph Sampson card?

It is card #97 of 132 in the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball set - Fleer's 'Premier' issue and the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps. It pictures the Houston Rockets Ralph Sampson, and is his recognized rookie card.

Is the 1986-87 Fleer Ralph Sampson his rookie card?

Yes - the hobby treats 1986-87 Fleer as the Rookie Card for any player whose first nationally-distributed (pack-issued) card it is. Ralph Sampson had no Topps card before the set, so this is his recognized RC. (Limited-distribution Star Company cards from 1983-86 are classed as Extended Rookie Cards.)

How do I spot a fake Ralph Sampson 1986-87 Fleer card?

1986-87 Fleer is the most counterfeited basketball set. Genuine cards are crisp and dark with an intact micro-dot print pattern; fakes look fuzzy or flat. Check the Fleer 'Premier' logo (the arrow is a darker gold than the yellow box) and, on the back, the NBA Players Association basketball, whose seam lines are visible on a real card and filled solid on a fake. For high-value copies, buy professionally graded (PSA/BGS/SGC) and verify the cert.

Is the 1986-87 Fleer Ralph Sampson valuable?

Value depends heavily on grade and centering. Use the links above to check current T206 Cards inventory and live eBay listings.
