About Rodney McCray

Rodney Earl McCray was a 6'7" forward out of the University of Louisville, where he won the 1980 NCAA championship as a freshman - grabbing 11 rebounds in the title-game upset of UCLA - and returned to the Final Four in 1983 with the dunk-happy Cardinals nicknamed the "Doctors of Dunk," who fell to Houston's "Phi Slama Jama." Drafted third overall by the Houston Rockets in 1983, he played 10 NBA seasons (1983-1993) for the Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls. A tenacious, versatile defender, McCray earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors in 1987 and First Team in 1988, and averaged 11.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists over his career. He never made an All-Star team but closed his career on a high note, winning the 1993 NBA title with Michael Jordan's Bulls. His younger card, one of the set's plentiful rookies, captures him during his Rockets prime; his brother Scooter McCray was a Louisville and NBA teammate along the way. McCray was inducted into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.
