About Robert Reid

A rugged 6'8" swingman out of St. Mary's University in Texas, Robert Reid was a second-round pick (40th overall) of the Houston Rockets in the 1977 NBA Draft and spent the bulk of a roughly 13-season career (1977-1991) in Houston, later playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Philadelphia 76ers. Able to defend and score across multiple positions, he was a two-way forward often cited as an early prototype of the "point forward" role. Reid never made an All-Star team, but he was central to both Rockets teams that reached the NBA Finals, in 1981 and 1986, each time falling to Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. His defense on Bird in the 1981 Finals became the series' talking point, holding the Celtics star to just eight points combined across Games 3 and 4 in Houston. Deeply religious, Reid abruptly stepped away from basketball after the 1981-82 season to focus on his Pentecostal faith, returning a year later. He retired averaging 11.4 points per game and died in 2024 at age 68.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer Robert Reid is card #90 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Robert Reid was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Houston Rockets.
