About Doc Rivers

Born Glenn Anton Rivers, "Doc" earned his nickname at a Marquette University summer camp, where he showed up wearing a "Dr. J" (Julius Erving) t-shirt and a coach - accounts differ between Al McGuire and Rick Majerus - pinned the name on him. A 6'4" point guard out of Marquette, Rivers was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round (31st overall) of the 1983 NBA Draft, and this is his rookie card. He played 14 NBA seasons (1983-1996) for the Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs, earning his lone All-Star selection in 1988, when he started at point guard for the Eastern Conference. Known for tenacious defense and playmaking, he averaged 10.9 points, 5.7 assists, and 1.8 steals per game and remains the Hawks' all-time assists leader (3,866). He later became a longtime NBA head coach, winning the 2008 title with the Boston Celtics.
