1986-87 Fleer #120 Spud Webb
1986-87 Fleer #120 Spud Webb

About Spud Webb
Born Anthony Jerome Webb, the 5'7" point guard earned the nickname "Spud" as a newborn, when a hospital visitor said his round head resembled the Sputnik satellite - shortened to "Spud." After junior college at Midland and a standout run at NC State, he was drafted in the fourth round (87th overall) of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, who released him before the season; he then earned a roster spot with the Atlanta Hawks, making this his rookie card. Webb played 13 NBA seasons (1985-1998) for the Hawks, Sacramento Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic, averaging 9.9 points and 5.3 assists over 814 games. His signature moment came on February 8, 1986, when - as one of the shortest players in league history - he won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at Dallas' Reunion Arena, defeating his 6'8" Hawks teammate and defending champion Dominique Wilkins with two perfect 50-point scores in the final round.
