1986-87 Fleer #94 Tree Rollins

About Tree Rollins
Born Wayne Monte Rollins, the 7'1" center starred at Clemson University - where he became the first athlete in any sport there to have his jersey (#30) retired - before the Atlanta Hawks made him the 14th overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft. Known as "Tree" for his towering frame and later as "The Intimidator," Rollins built an 18-season career (1977-1995) as one of the era's premier shot-blockers, playing for the Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic. He led the NBA in blocked shots in 1982-83 (4.3 per game), finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting that season, and earned All-Defensive honors twice (Second Team 1982-83, First Team 1983-84). He retired with 2,542 career blocks - fourth all-time at the time and still among the top ten. Rollins is also remembered for a 1983 playoff scuffle in which he bit Celtics guard Danny Ainge's finger, and he later spent years as an NBA and WNBA assistant and interim head coach.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Tree Rollins is card #94 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Tree Rollins was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Atlanta Hawks.
