1986-87 Fleer #63 Lafayette Lever
1986-87 Fleer #63 Lafayette Lever

About Lafayette Lever
Lafayette Lever, universally known as "Fat" Lever - a nickname born when his younger brother couldn't pronounce all the syllables of "Lafayette" - was one of the NBA's premier all-around guards of the late 1980s. Out of Arizona State, he was drafted 11th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1982 and played 12 seasons (1982-1994) at guard for the Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, and Dallas Mavericks. His prime came in Denver, where he was a two-time All-Star (1988, 1990), earned All-NBA Second Team honors in 1987, and made the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1988. A relentless rebounder for his size and a constant triple-double threat, he averaged 13.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2.2 steals over his career and finished with 43 triple-doubles. This is his rookie card in the set; note that Fleer printed his given name, "Lafayette Lever," rather than the nickname collectors knew him by.
