1986-87 Fleer #66 Maurice Lucas

Los Angeles Lakers · Base Set
Condition rarity

A "Rule of 11" card: it sat at the edge of the 132-card press sheet, so copies tend to come off-center with print problems and edge wear - making high grades scarcer than the player's fame would suggest.

About Maurice Lucas

A bruising 6'9" power forward out of Marquette, Maurice Lucas turned pro in 1974, first drafted by the ABA's Carolina Cougars and taken 14th overall by the NBA's Chicago Bulls before choosing the ABA (Spirits of St. Louis, Kentucky Colonels). Over a 14-year pro career (1974-1988) he suited up for seven NBA teams - Portland, New Jersey, New York, Phoenix, the Lakers, Seattle, and Portland again - making four NBA All-Star teams (1977-79, 1983) plus one in the ABA, and earning All-NBA Second Team and All-Defensive First Team honors in 1978. His signature season came in 1976-77, when he led the champion Portland Trail Blazers at 20.2 points and 11.2 rebounds a game; nicknamed "The Enforcer" for his physical play, he swung the NBA Finals by answering Darryl Dawkins with an elbow in Game 2. Portland retired his No. 20 in 1988. Career averages: 14.6 ppg, 9.1 rpg. On this Lakers-era card, his commons status belies a "Rule of 11" press-sheet-edge print run that makes clean, well-centered copies harder to find than expected. Lucas died in 2010.
