1986-87 Fleer #16 Maurice Cheeks

About Maurice Cheeks
A four-year starter at West Texas State (now West Texas A&M), Maurice Cheeks was a second-round pick, 36th overall, by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1978 NBA Draft. The steady point guard played 15 seasons (1978-1993) for five teams - the 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks and New Jersey Nets - though he spent his prime 11 years in Philadelphia. He was a four-time NBA All-Star (1983, 1986-1988) and an elite defender, earning four straight All-Defensive First Team selections (1983-1986) plus a Second Team nod in 1987. Cheeks quarterbacked the Moses Malone-led 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship. Known as "Mo" - and "Little Mo" alongside Malone's "Big Mo" - he was famous for a quiet, all-around game rather than flash, averaging 11.1 points, 6.7 assists and 2.1 steals for his career. He retired as the NBA's all-time steals leader (2,310) and ranked fifth in career assists (7,392), and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Maurice Cheeks is card #16 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Maurice Cheeks was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Philadelphia 76ers.
