1986-87 Fleer #114 Andrew Toney

About Andrew Toney
A 6'3" shooting guard out of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Andrew Toney was drafted 8th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1980 NBA Draft and spent his entire eight-season career (1980-1988) in Philadelphia. A lethal clutch scorer, he earned the nickname "The Boston Strangler" for repeatedly torching the rival Boston Celtics in the early-1980s Sixers-Celtics wars. Toney made back-to-back All-Star teams in 1983 and 1984 and was a key backcourt piece of the 1983 NBA champion 76ers, a team stacked with Hall of Famers Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Bobby Jones and Maurice Cheeks. He averaged 15.9 points per game for his career, peaking at 20.4 in 1983-84. Chronic stress fractures in both feet cut his career short at 30; Bob Ryan later called him "the most forgotten great player in NBA history." This card is one of his few nationally issued cards, appearing in his rookie-card year of the set.

About this card

Because of the multi-year gap, it is the recognized Rookie Card for Andrew Toney. He is pictured with the Philadelphia 76ers.
