About Dennis Johnson

A tenacious 6'4" guard out of Pepperdine, Dennis Johnson was a second-round pick (29th overall) of the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1976 NBA Draft and went on to play 14 seasons for three teams: Seattle (1976-80), Phoenix (1980-83) and Boston (1983-90). A five-time All-Star (1979-82, 1985), he was named to nine straight All-Defensive teams (six First Team, three Second Team) and earned All-NBA First Team honors in 1981. Johnson won three NBA championships-with Seattle in 1979, where he was named Finals MVP, and with the Boston Celtics in 1984 and 1986-and averaged 14.1 points per game for his career. Known simply as "DJ," a tag coined by Sonics announcer Bob Blackburn to set him apart from teammates John and Vinnie Johnson, he was celebrated as a clutch "money player" and lockdown defender. As the Celtics' starting point guard during the Bird-Magic era that drove this set's demand, he formed a legendary passing partnership with Larry Bird. The Celtics retired his No. 3 in 1991; he died of a heart attack in 2007, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame enshrined him posthumously in 2010.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer Dennis Johnson is card #50 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Dennis Johnson was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Boston Celtics.
