About James Edwards

Born James Franklin Edwards, this 7-foot center out of the University of Washington was a third-round pick (46th overall) of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1977 NBA Draft. Nicknamed "Buddha" for his horseshoe moustache and stoic, unhurried demeanor, Edwards enjoyed one of the game's great longevity stories, playing 19 seasons (1977-1996) for eight franchises: the Lakers, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers and Chicago Bulls. This card captures him during his Suns tenure (1983-1988), where he was a reliable low-post scorer. A dependable interior presence rather than an All-Star, he averaged 12.7 points per game and scored 14,862 career points. Edwards found his greatest glory late: a member of Detroit's "Bad Boys," he won back-to-back titles with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990, then captured a third ring with the 1996 Chicago Bulls in his final season, retiring a three-time NBA champion.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer James Edwards is card #29 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. James Edwards was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Phoenix Suns.
