About Darrell Griffith
A high-flying 6'4" shooting guard, Darrell Griffith starred at the University of Louisville (1976-1980), leading the Cardinals to their first NCAA championship in 1980 - scoring 23 points in the title-game win over UCLA - and taking home the Wooden Award as the nation's best college player. The Utah Jazz drafted him second overall in 1980, and he spent his entire 11-year NBA career (1980-1991) with the franchise. Griffith won NBA Rookie of the Year for 1980-81 and averaged 16.2 points per game over his career, twice competing in the Slam Dunk Contest (1984, 1985). A pioneer beyond the arc, he set an NBA single-season record with 92 three-pointers in 1984-85 and led the league in three-point percentage (36.1%) in 1983-84. His electrifying dunks at Louisville earned him the enduring nickname "Dr. Dunkenstein." Foot and knee injuries eventually curtailed his career, and he retired in 1991.
