1986-87 Fleer #124 Gus Williams
1986-87 Fleer #124 Gus Williams

About Gus Williams
A quicksilver 6'2" point guard out of USC, Gus Williams was drafted in the second round of the 1975 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors, breaking in as an NBA All-Rookie First Team selection in 1976. He starred over 11 seasons (1975-1984, then 1984-1987) for the Warriors, Seattle SuperSonics, Washington Bullets, and Atlanta Hawks, retiring with 14,093 points at a 17.1 ppg career clip. His flashy passing and lightning first step earned him the nickname "The Wizard," and he was the engine of Seattle's 1979 NBA championship, averaging a team-high 28.6 points in that Finals. Williams sat out the entire 1980-81 season in a contract dispute, then returned to win 1982 Comeback Player of the Year - the same season he made the first of two straight All-Star teams (1982, 1983) and All-NBA First Team. This card catches him during his Bullets stint (1984-1986), one of his final NBA stops before a brief 1987 turn with Atlanta. Seattle retired his No. 1 in 2004.

About this card
The 1986-87 Fleer Gus Williams is card #124 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Gus Williams was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Washington Bullets.
