About Herb Williams

Herbert "Herb" Williams was a 6'11" center/power forward out of Ohio State, where he scored a then-school-record 2,011 points and earned All-Big Ten honors. The Indiana Pacers took him with the 14th overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft, and he went on to play 18 seasons (1981-1999) for the Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, and briefly the Toronto Raptors. A durable defensive big man, Williams posted career totals of 11,944 points (10.8 ppg), 6,509 rebounds, and 1,605 blocked shots, peaking at 19.9 points per game with Indiana in 1985-86 - the form that anchors his card in this set. This 1986-87 Fleer issue is his first widely recognized NBA card. Though never an All-Star, he carved out a long, respected role, spending his final years as a veteran backing up Patrick Ewing in New York. After retiring he stayed in the Knicks organization as an assistant coach and served as the team's interim head coach in 2004-05.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer Herb Williams is card #125 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Because of the multi-year gap, it is the recognized Rookie Card for Herb Williams. He is pictured with the Indiana Pacers.
