1986-87 Fleer #106 Steve Stipanovich
1986-87 Fleer #106 Steve Stipanovich

About Steve Stipanovich
A 6'11" center out of the University of Missouri, where he starred from 1979 to 1983, Steve Stipanovich was selected second overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 1983 NBA Draft, still the highest a Missouri player has ever been chosen. This is his rookie card. He spent his entire NBA career with the Pacers, playing five seasons (1983-1988) and earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1983-84. Over 403 games he averaged 13.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists, shooting 48.4% from the field. Nicknamed "Stipo," his promising career was cut short by a degenerative knee condition that forced his retirement at just 27; he later said the injury was so severe he "can't even cut the grass." Missouri retired his No. 40, and he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
