1986-87 Fleer #12 Manute Bol
1986-87 Fleer #12 Manute Bol

About Manute Bol
Standing 7'7", Manute Bol was one of the two tallest players in NBA history and the defining shot-blocker of his era. Born in Turalei, Sudan (now South Sudan) into a Dinka family, he played a single college season at the University of Bridgeport before the Washington Bullets drafted him in the second round (31st overall) in 1985. This is his rookie card, from his standout debut season in which he set a rookie record with 397 blocks and led the NBA in blocks per game. Over 10 NBA seasons (1985-1995) with the Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, the center led the league in blocks twice (1985-86 and 1988-89) and made the 1986 NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He averaged 2.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks over 624 games and remains the only player to retire with more career blocks (2,086) than points. His first name means "special blessing" in the Dinka language. After basketball, Bol gave millions of dollars to Sudanese refugee and humanitarian causes; he died in 2010 at age 47.
