1986-87 Fleer #111 Mychal Thompson

Portland Trail Blazers · Base Set
Condition rarity

A "Rule of 11" card: it sat at the edge of the 132-card press sheet, so copies tend to come off-center with print problems and edge wear - making high grades scarcer than the player's fame would suggest.

About Mychal Thompson

A 6'10" center-forward out of the University of Minnesota, where he was a consensus first-team All-American, Mychal Thompson was the No. 1 overall pick of the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1978 NBA Draft - the first foreign-born player ever taken first overall (he was born in Nassau, Bahamas). He earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1979 and peaked in 1981-82, averaging 20.8 points and 11.7 rebounds. Over 14 seasons with Portland (1978-1986), San Antonio, and the Los Angeles Lakers, he scored 12,810 points (13.7 ppg) with 7.4 rebounds per game. Traded to the Lakers in 1987, he became a key frontcourt reserve behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and won back-to-back championships in 1987 and 1988. Nicknamed "Sweet Bells" after Hall of Famer Walt Bellamy, Thompson is the father of NBA star Klay Thompson and MLB's Trayce Thompson. This is not his rookie card, and it carries no name or nameplate error - it is flagged only as a "Rule of 11" edge-of-sheet card, harder to find well-centered and clean in high grade.

About this card

The 1986-87 Fleer Mychal Thompson is card #111 in Fleer's landmark 'Premier' issue - the first nationally-distributed NBA set since 1981-82 Topps and, for many collectors, the start of the modern era of basketball cards. Mychal Thompson was already an established star by 1986; this is not his rookie card, but he is one of the names that make the set a who's-who of the era. He is pictured with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1986-87 Fleer Mychal Thompson card?

Why is the Mychal Thompson hard to find in high grade?

It is one of the set's condition-sensitive cards. The flush red/white/blue borders chip to reveal the white core at the slightest touch, and centering is tough - so high grades are far scarcer than the player's profile suggests.
