1986-87 Fleer #117 Kiki Vandeweghe

About Kiki Vandeweghe
Born Ernest Maurice VanDeWeghe III in Wiesbaden, West Germany - the son of NBA player Ernie Vandeweghe - "Kiki" was a nickname reportedly given to him in infancy over his curly hair. A 6'8" forward out of UCLA, where he reached the 1980 NCAA title game, he was drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1980 but refused to sign and was traded to the Denver Nuggets that December. Over 13 NBA seasons (1980-1993) he played for Denver, the Portland Trail Blazers, the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers. A pure scorer, he averaged 19.7 points per game for his career, topping 20 a game for several straight seasons and peaking near 29.4 in 1983-84, and earned two All-Star selections (1983 and 1984 with Denver). His 51 points helped decide the highest-scoring game in NBA history, Denver's triple-overtime 186-184 loss to Detroit in December 1983. After retiring he became an NBA executive, serving as general manager of the Nuggets, head coach of the New Jersey Nets, and later the league's Executive VP of Basketball Operations. His 1986-87 Fleer card (#117, as a Trail Blazer) is one of his key early cardboard appearances.
